“I come to you with only Karate, empty hands. I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor, should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons, Karate, my empty hands.” - Ed Parker
Ed Parker is considered the "Father" of American Kenpo Karate. He was born in Honolulu Hawaii on 19 March 1931. Mr Parker studied Kenpo under William Chow and was promoted to the rank of Black Belt in 1953. He recognised that modern times posed new situations that were not addressed in Kenpo, so he adapted the art to make it more easily applicable to the streets of America. He called his adapted style American Kenpo Karate.
Mr Parker realised that no two people were alike and his system needed to be able to adapt to the practitioner. Therefore, as opposed to the more traditional martial arts, more emphasis was included on the principles of each technique whilst also teaching the technique itself. This would provide the practitioner with the understanding of why each move of a technique was being performed instead of learning a sequence of moves 'parrot fashion'. Understanding the principles of a technique would then allow the practitioner to adapt it to suit their own style whilst still applying the principles of the movement. This provides a greater flexibility in learning and opens the style up to a greater demographic of people of differing ages, height, fitness, etc. A number of the principles are included within the yellow belt syllabus which is the first belt rank to be achieved.
